At the next size up there is no rectangular hobby kit to match: a 22-foot Growing Dome is $20,850 for 380 square feet, about $55 per square foot, with a 10 ft 10 in center height. We did not find a priced polycarbonate rectangle near 380 square feet.

## How These Numbers Were Built, and When

Every price was read on September 20, 2026 from the manufacturer's page, or a named US dealer where the maker does not print a price or a rating. Growing Spaces' site blocks automated readers, so its pages were read in a browser. Exaco publishes no snow or wind figure for the Riga on its own product page, so the dealer figure is used and marked, and the higher figure on Exaco's blog is noted. Pacific Domes' store was offline, so its price is a December 2024 archive and treated as quote-only. The only independent thermal study we found is a 2016 Carleton University master's thesis. We have not built or measured either shape.

## Where the Dome Wins: Snow and Wind

Growing Spaces publishes a rating table by size, standard 115 mph wind at every diameter, and snow from 85 psf at 15 feet down to 30 psf at 42 feet, rising past 120 psf with engineering and an upgraded wood or insulated-concrete foundation wall. At 15 feet, 85 psf is more than three times the highest figure any rectangular polycarbonate hobby kit under $10,000 publishes. The University of Alaska Fairbanks extension confirms the shape's reputation without numbers: "dome-shaped greenhouses are popular in coastal areas of Alaska because they are less likely to be damaged in high winds and stormy weather." Growing Spaces also says a concrete foundation is not needed for 15 to 33 foot domes, though the ratings assume its foundation wall.

That advantage belongs to the Growing Dome specifically. Pacific Domes publishes 20 psf of snow with wind on its vinyl-covered domes. Zip Tie Domes, Harvest Right and Ekodome publish no rating at all. A round shape is not a rating; a rated round shape is. ## Where the Rectangle Wins: Usable Space and Price

Growing Spaces is candid about the floor: "beds, work areas, and seating all share the listed floor space," and the design includes a pond, about 740 gallons on a 15-foot dome, plus paths. The site itself needs the dome's diameter plus about 3 feet. No extension source we found quantifies how much of a round floor becomes bed; the UAF rule that benches should be "no more than an arm's reach in width" is the only bench guidance, and it favors straight runs along straight walls. A 17 ft 6 in by 9 ft 8 in Riga takes two benches and a center path with nothing left over.

On price, the dome is $63 per kit square foot against $56 for the Riga, $46 for the Palram Glory and $34 at the Glory's discounted dealer. Only glass costs more per square foot. Then add what the dome kit excludes, in Growing Spaces' own words: "site work, freight, installation, raised beds, soil, irrigation, utilities, and locally sourced foundation, pond, and undersoil materials." Installation comes in three service levels, all quoted by phone; no price is published anywhere. The 22-foot crate weighs 2,235 to 2,675 pounds. Lead time is three to six weeks per the FAQ and four to eight weeks after release to production per the product page. The structural warranty covers struts and hubs for five years; the polycarbonate is under the panel maker's warranty, which the glazing page did not let us read.

## The Heat Claim

Growing Spaces states the dome has "40 percent less exterior surface through which heat can escape on a cold night," with no study cited. Surface area does drive heat loss, as UAF's extension puts it: loss "depends on the surface area of the greenhouse, the insulating value of the glazing, wind conditions and the temperature difference." A sphere encloses volume with less surface than a box, so the direction of the claim is right. The size of it is unmeasured by anyone independent. The one study we found, a 2016 Carleton University thesis that modeled an Ottawa community dome in TRNSYS, found the best scenario still sat below 5 degrees C for 3,081 hours a year and concluded that "appropriate growing conditions cannot be maintained in the biodome year-round without the use of auxiliary power." A dome in a cold climate is a heated greenhouse with a good envelope, not an unheated one. The hub kit is the plain budget dome: a frame you cover yourself, no rating, a 30-day return. Ekodome is Growing Dome money without a snow figure, a floor area or a warranty term on the page. If the rating is why you want a dome, only one company sells it.

## Permits and the HOA

Growing Spaces: "many building departments regard Growing Dome geodesic greenhouses as temporary structures that do not require building permits," and "many building departments use square footage to determine if the structure is temporary or permanent," with the customer responsible for permits. Pacific Domes says the same, and adds that "in many urban areas, if it's 200 square feet or larger, you will need a permit." A Colorado shed builder puts the common line at 200 square feet with Boulder County at 120, and a dome builder writing in May 2026 warns that HOA covenants "can restrict unconventional designs even when the county would happily approve them." So a 15-foot dome at 175 square feet often clears the line a shed clears; an 18-foot dome at 255 usually does not. ## Which Buyer Should Get Which

- **Mountain snow, coastal wind, and a budget past $15,000 installed:** the Growing Dome, at 15 or 18 feet, with the installation quote and the foundation-wall requirement in writing before the deposit.
- **A mild climate and a need for bench space:** a Riga 5 or a Palram Glory 8x16. Same money or less, straight benches, and a rating that matches most counties' design loads.

- **A dome for the shape, on a small budget:** a hub kit and film, with the knowledge that nothing about it is rated.

Less surface per volume means less loss per volume, and that direction is physics.
